Parking:
You will be directed to parking near the University of Alaska Southeast (transition/Ironman Village)

Historical Weather:
You'd expect Alaska to be cold during the entire year, but summers in Juneau can actually be beautiful - with the exception of a 50% chance of a rainy day.  Also surprisingly, the water will be cold but not frigid (65Ëš).  Check the PJAMM Cycling Weather Tool for current and historic weather data.

RACE REVIEW

   IRONMAN Alaska

Bike Course Recon

Overall Surface Quality:

Excellent, an out and back on a recently paved road (2015/2016)

Strava workout from last year’s race:

2022 is the inaugural race - no workouts or segments

Significant Ascents:

Rolling hills and stunning views characterize this course. Quite a few of the rollers break 5%, but never for very long:

Highlighted sections >5%

Most of the climbs have wavering gradients and are often broken up by flat sections or brief downhills. Below are the longest ascents along Glacier Highway:

Climb @ mi 2.8 and 57.3  (heading north)                1.4mi,  180ft gained,  8.6% peak gradient

Climb @ mi 44 and 98 (heading south)                2.5mi,  250ft gained,  7.3% peak gradient

  • Reaches highest point on the course

Climb @ mi 50.4 and 105 (heading south)                1mi,  150ft gained,  7.3% peak gradient

  • Contains steepest mile and ½ mile of course

Turn By Turn

This is a typical double out-and-back on the same road. There are U-turns at miles 28, 54, and 84, and a couple 90˚ turns to get in and out of transition. Otherwise, there are no sharp turns along the entire course.

Turn 1 and 3:

180˚ U turn;  @ mi 28 and 84

Entrance gradient (preceding 0.1 mi):  2.2%

Exit gradient (next 0.1 mi):  -2.2%

  • Won’t be hard to find, is literally at the “end of the road”:

Turn 2:

180˚ U turn;  @ mi 54

Entrance gradient (preceding 0.1 mi):  2%

Exit gradient (next 0.1 mi):  -2%
