INTRO
Monte Grappa's approach from Seren del Grappa is one of eleven paved routes to the Cima Grappa summit, and one of only two starting points - along with Caupo - at the mountain's far northern base. From the bridge over the Torrente Stizzone, the route climbs 20.7 km (12.9 mi) and gains 1,364 m (4,474 ft) at a 6.3% average grade to the memorial at 1,701 m (5,582 ft), with an opening stretch that repeatedly tips past 20%.
We start in the quaint town of Seren, then head south along Via Generale Giardino to the bridge crossing the Torrente Stizzone, marked "Boarnal / Pradazern / Col dei Bof" - it's easy to miss, and we nearly turned back the first time thinking we'd gone the wrong way. Once across, the road narrows into a steep, forested canyon: thick foliage, rock faces, and hairpins where the grade climbs past 20%. It's some of the most striking scenery of any Monte Grappa approach, and among the quietest.
The Seren route merges with the Caupo and Cismon approaches roughly two-thirds of the way up, then with Romano d'Ezzelino near the top, before all eleven routes converge in the final half-mile at Rifugio Bassano and the Sacrario Militare del Monte Grappa - the WWI ossuary holding the remains of roughly 22,000 Italian and Austrian soldiers who died fighting on this mountain.

The steepest kilometer comes early, averaging 16.9%, with individual pitches that push past 20% - among the hardest sustained sections of any of Monte Grappa's eleven paved ascents.
After that opening test, the gradient settles into a calmer rhythm through the wooded middle miles, before a handful of shorter, punchier rollers near the merge points with the Caupo, Cismon, and Romano d'Ezzelino routes closer to the top.
Roadway: The road is paved the entire way from the bridge over the Torrente Stizzone to the summit, though it runs noticeably narrower and rougher in spots than Monte Grappa's busier approaches, especially through the steep, forested canyon in the climb's first third. We found no confirmed 2026 closures specific to this Seren approach - check Provincia di Belluno's road alerts before a winter trip, since other routes on the mountain do see seasonal closures near the summit.
Traffic: Traffic is very light throughout - on our own ascent we passed only a handful of vehicles the entire way up. It picks up modestly after merging with the Caupo and Cismon routes, and again near the top where all eleven Monte Grappa approaches converge at Rifugio Bassano.
Parking: Seren del Grappa is a small, quiet hill village at the mountain's northern base, not a tourist hub; there's informal parking near the start of Via Generale Giardino in the town center, close to Bar Vitocco on Piazza T. Vecellio - the route's Brevetto del Grappa stamping stop, closed Wednesdays.
A standard road bike works, but with pitches that repeatedly exceed 20% in the climb's first third, a compact crankset or a wide-range cassette is close to mandatory - this is one of the steepest sustained sections of any of Monte Grappa's eleven paved approaches.
Bar Vitocco in Seren del Grappa's town center is the last easy stop for food and water before the climb begins. After that there's nothing until Rifugio Bassano's cafe at the summit, so fill bottles before you leave town. Pack a light layer for the top - the 1,701 m (5,582 ft) finish is noticeably cooler and windier than the base, even in summer.

Seren del Grappa itself is a small, quiet hill village with limited accommodation, better suited to a day-trip start than an overnight base.
If you have extra time, the Bosco degli Eroi ("Forest of Heroes") is a Seren-specific stop worth knowing about: a shaded 5 or 10 km walking loop from the nearby Conca delle Bocchette that mixes WWI history - the ridge at Ca' Tasson saw heavy fighting - with wood sculptures donated by local artists each year. It's also a place to try Morlacco and Bastardo, the two mountain cheeses made in this part of the Grappa massif.
Watch closely for the turn off Via Generale Giardino at the bridge over the Torrente Stizzone - it's easy to miss, and more than one rider has continued straight past it.
