The climb averages 5.8% over 16.4 km (10.2 mi). The steepest 500 m averages 11.5% (12.6% for the steepest quarter mile), the steepest 1 km averages 8.7%, the steepest 1.6 km (1 mi) holds 8.1%, and the steepest 5 km (3.1 mi) holds 7.2%. Even the steepest 10 km (6.2 mi) averages 5.7%.

The hardest stretch comes early, between about 3 km and 5 km (1.9 to 3.1 mi), where the road runs close to 8% for two straight kilometers. The grade then eases to about 2.5% between 5 km and 6 km (3.1 to 3.7 mi) and dips slightly downhill between 7 km and 8 km (4.3 to 5.0 mi). The small descents total about 116 m (379 ft). From there the road builds back to 6.5 to 7.3% for the final 6 km (3.7 mi).
Roadway: The climb is paved from the seafront to the finish, following the provincial road that rises from Bagnara toward Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte. Expect hairpin bends and a road that gets steadily more open and scenic as it gains height above the Strait.

Traffic: The first kilometers run through Bagnara's hillside neighborhoods, so expect everyday town traffic and parked cars there. Higher up, the road serves the Solano hamlets and the route toward Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte.

Parking: Bagnara Calabra is a coastal town of just over 9,000 residents, and we recommend parking in the lower town and riding from there. The railway station also makes it possible to arrive by train. The start sits at only 65 m (213 ft) of elevation.
Provisions: Fill your bottles and stock up in Bagnara before you leave town. The Solano area is rural, with farms, olive groves and pastures rather than a string of shops.

Gear: With ramps above 12% and a steady 6 to 7% grind to finish, compact gearing with a 30 tooth largest cog is a good idea.

Weather: The finish is about 945 m (3,100 ft) above the start. In summer start early to beat the heat on the coast, and carry a light layer for the cooler finish.

Bagnara Calabra is the best base for this climb, and the town rewards a longer stay. Swordfish is the local specialty, and Bagnara is also known for its IGP torrone and Costa Viola wines. Wander the old center for the Chiesa del Carmine, the Ruffo ducal castle and the Aragonese tower, or the Garibaldi Fountain, then stroll the seafront promenade over the Strait. A monument in town honors the singer Mia Martini, a native of Bagnara.

At the top, a memorial stone in Solano commemorates the Garibaldian colonel Paul de Flotte, who fell fighting in the area, and the mid-July feast of the Madonna del Carmine brings a procession up toward the Piani d'Aspromonte. Scilla, with its waterfront swordfish restaurants at Chianalea, is a short ride along the coast, and the hamlet viewpoints and pottery of Pellegrina and Ceramida are covered on our Pellegrina Bivio Solano page. The same road network opens many other climbs, so use our Routes in the Area tool to see what else is nearby.
