What is the surface like?

Like much of central Oregon, it’s about as good as gravel cycling gets.

View the Images tab in our Profile Tool for more detailed information on the road surface.

The climb begins near a river/bridge, with easy parking at the start coordinates adjacent to the river.  For the first half of the climb, you’ll be in thick forest without a view of much of anything. The gravel road is in good condition and can be ridden on most any tires.

There some washboarded sections to watch out for on the descent, as well as a few random fallen trees and rocks (when PJAMM rode in early June 2024)

Eventually, the gravel road takes you through a series of massive boulders with great views to your right (and some steep drop offs!), as you climb.

A few miles from the summit, you’ll get a view of the road ahead, as it makes a large horseshoe around the inner mountain to the summit.

The final miles of the climb are very steep, and very tough, even with low gearing!

At the summit in June of 2024, PJAMM encountered some snow, but was still able to summit. Plan for cold weather up top!
