CLIMB SUMMARY

Palo Comado Canyon

Ride Date:

June 2024

What we rode:

Scott Addict

Our tires:

Front: 45 mm knobby

Rear: 40 mm knobby

What tires we recommend:

35mm or larger knobby or hybrid tires

What is the surface like?

Despite the whole road being closed to auto traffic (justifying no regular upkeep), the surface is very good for most of the climb, with minimal rocks. While you could probably climb this on slick 30mm road tires, we rode it on knobbies and had a lot of fun. There are only a couple of sections that have minimal washout, which is what pushes this into a 3 surface index.

Climb summary by PJAMM’s Sam Lyons

From where I’m living at the moment, I’m lucky enough to have this climb right in my backyard. Literally - I ride out the front door and am immediately in the Las Virgenes Open Space, a nature preserve that covers almost 50 square miles of hills just north of Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains.  The preserve is a hotspot for mountain bikers and those of us looking to get our gravel fix.

The climb begins on one of the better kept up access roads in the park. Since it’s a nature preserve, there’s no car traffic allowed. A gentle uphill for about 4 miles before the start of the climb makes for a smooth warmup.

As with most gravel climbs, the gradient varies wildly, though not as wildly as some others in the area. A 4% section will be paired with a 15% section, then back to 3%, and so on. However, the surface is so clean that you’re usually able to stand in the saddle without slipping.

At the end of the climb at the intersection of Albertson Fire Road is one of my all-time favorite things to see - a cycling maintenance box! A full ParkTool cycling toolkit and even a stand to hang your bike while you fix it.

Incredible! I love this place!
