INTRO

One of IRONMAN's most scenic 70.3 courses is also one of its hardest: its one of the few that contains a significant climb - the Col de Vence (9.7km at 6.6%) as you ride up into the southern Alps before looping back around to the beach.  However, the good news is that once you pass the town of Coursegoules at km 44, the bulk of the climbing is done - there is less than 90 meters of elevation gain for the remaining 46km.

This race takes place simultaneously with IRONMAN Nice, with the full Ironman swim starting a couple hours before the full. The two transitions are next to each other but separated.

Parking:
We really recommend staying at a hotel within walking distance to Transition for this one. Parking is a nightmare, since in addition to the closed roads and thousands of others trying to find parking, it's also downtown Nice. Here are a few close parking lots to look for if you get lucky:

Historical Weather:
Summers in nice are generally a hot mediterranean climate, with June afternoons typically in the low to mid 80Ëšs. Check the PJAMM Cycling Weather Tool for both current and historic weather data.

70.3 IRONMAN NICE Bike Course Analysis

Overall Surface Quality:

Outstanding. The French take pride in their mountain roads and it shows.

Significant Ascents:

70.3 Nice is one of the hilliest Half Ironman courses there is, much of that because it is one of the few 70.3s to include a PJAMM Ranked Climb: the Col de Vence. Several sections of this climb approach 10%, with the grade peaking above 12%.

Col de Vence  (@ km 26.6)          -        9.7km          6.6%          633m gained          4.2 fiets

There are also three other ascents to be noted:

Climb out of St-Lourent-du-Var (@ km 10)

  • Peaks at 13%
  • This part of the course is shared with the 140.6, and contains steepest 500m (9%) and 1km (6.7%) in any 140.6 on earth. However, several other 70.3s with PJAMM ranked climbs beat these grades.

Climb into Coursegoules  (@ km 42)

  • 60 meter climb beginning at a right turn onto Rte de la Ferrage
  • Peaks at 8%
  • Much more fun than doing the full Cote de Coursegoules in the 140.6

Rte de Nice Climb (@ km 137)

  • Last hill on the bike course
  • 2km at 3% grade

Obstacles and Other Notes:

  • 2km of technical descent beginning at km 47 (-4.5%, 4 hairpins)
  • 11km of very technical descent back down into Nice, beginning at km 64
  • Due to the amount of climbing/descending, it’s not uncommon to see people choose to ride road bikes with drop bars + clip on aero bars for this triathlon.
