Sonoma County’s Top 5 most scenic bike climbs, counter-clockwise from top left:
Bullfrog Pond; Coleman Valley; King Ridge; Fort Ross; Geysers
We have travelled the world to document the top, most scenic, and most epic bike climbs. However, Sonoma County is our home, and we have cycled every inch of this gorgeous county and know it like the back of our hands. The following is a list in reverse order of our picks for Sonoma County’s Top 5 Most Scenic Bike Climbs.
#5 SONOMA COUNTY MOST SCENIC BIKE CLIMB
BULLFROG POND
Vista Point.
Ride through the incomparably beautiful Armstrong Woods State Natural Reserve to the viewpoint at the top. In addition to being uniquely beautiful, this climb is also extremely challenging and hosts the steepest one mile segment in the county (13.7%).
#4 SONOMA COUNTY MOST SCENIC BIKE CLIMB
FORT ROSS ROAD
This has two of the Big Three scenic attractions of Sonoma County: Redwoods and Pacific Coast (it’s only missing the vineyards). While extremely scenic, the climb is also unquestionably difficult with an average grade of 10.7% over its 2.4 mile length.
#3 SONOMA COUNTY MOST SCENIC BIKE CLIMB
COLEMAN VALLEY ROAD
Home to the our favorite set of rustic structures in the county, this is a wonderful climb from the Pacific Ocean to historic Occidental (founded 1878). The winding beauty that is Coleman Valley Road gives us views of the rugged Pacific Ocean coastline, lush green pastures where some of California’s famous happy cows can be seen grazing, and the overall unmatched beauty that comes when Occidental’s forested greenery gradually gives way to the vast grey-blue expanse of the Pacific (or vice versa, depending on which way you decide to experience the climb).
#2 SONOMA COUNTY MOST SCENIC BIKE CLIMB
KING RIDGE
Many say this is the most scenic bike climb in Sonoma County, so it certainly qualifies as at least #2. This amazing bike ride begins in the small western Sonoma County town of Cazadero, winding and climbing its way through redwoods and rural ranchland to its finish at the intersection of Tin Barn-King Ridge and Hauser Bridge Roads.
#1 SONOMA COUNTY MOST SCENIC BIKE CLIMB
GEYSERS ROAD
Sonoma County is best known for its vineyards and world class wineries. The Geysers climb is top on our list because it has the most amazing vineyard views in Sonoma County (and Napa County, for that matter). If you’re looking for the quintessential Sonoma County climb, Geysers Road will surely not disappoint.
